EN - Vocabulary Lessons

If you saw my students' Language Arts books, you would see drawings of vocabulary they have learned so far in this school year.

Whenever we read a new story, we go over some vocabulary by guessing what they may mean. Then we use them in example sentences, draw pictures of the situations (I get ideas from them and draw. I tell them they can copy mine or draw their own version.), act out the situations, and finally write their definitions.

I enjoy this process.
Risk takers enjoy guessing what they may mean by applying their prior knowledge (such as looking at the prefixes and suffixes).
Story tellers enjoy making up sentences.
Artists enjoy drawing the situations.
Actors and actresses enjoy playing various roles.
Linguists enjoy summarizing the discussion into a definition.
And I get to be an audience for all of this process.

Ahh, how I love being a teacher.

EN & JP - One Saturday Afternoon with My Friend 友だちと過ごすある土曜日の午後

We saw this vaseful of strong presence
in front of one of my favorite stores called Holidays in Makawao.
  マカワオにある私の大好きなお店の一つ、Holidaysという服屋さんの
前に飾られていた、存在感のあるお花。

One Saturday, my friend Nao-chan and I had a nice afternoon together.

She is a great friend. She is a wonderful friend.

She is one of the first people who help me whenever I am in need of it, like when I get sick.

She always brings me something to eat.

She helped me tremendously when I moved the last time. (Here is a blog entry about that.)

She makes me laugh when I could use some laughter.

She shares her life experiences and her advise in a way that I can really hear and appreciate.

She is like a great big sister I always wanted to have (but couldn't because I was the first-born child).

ある土曜日の午後、友だちの直ちゃんと一緒に過ごしました。

直ちゃんはすてきな友だち。直ちゃんは素晴らしい友だち。

直ちゃんは助けが必要なときにすぐに来てくれる友人の一人。風邪ひいたときとか。

何か食べるもの持ってきてくれる。

最後に引っ越したときは、すっごーく手伝ってもらいました。

笑いが必要なときに笑わしてくれる人。

人生経験をシェアしてくれて、アドバイスも本当に「ふんふん」と思えるように話してくれる。

ずっと欲しかったけど無理だった（私が第一子なので）お姉ちゃんが出来たような感じ。

We walked around and checked different stores in Makawao and bought these rings together (similar designs but not the same) at a store called Collections.

They look like insects which I love.

I appreciate having great friends.

EN & JP - Maui Matsuri 2014 マウイ祭り2014

We were invited again at the annual Maui Matsuri!

This year, just 3 of us performed: Naoko, Azusa, and I.

First, I did "Kappa" by myself, and then 3 of us danced "'94."

Both items were choreographed by the late Suga Kunitomo.

"Kappa" was created in 1999, and "'94" was made in 1994 as the name suggests.

"Kappa" is a comical and really fun item to perform and to watch.

今年も呼んで頂き踊って参りましたよ、マウイ祭りにて。

今年は例年より少なく3人で。直ちゃんと梓ちゃんと私。

まず私一人で「カッパ」を踊らして頂き、その後に3人で「94」を。

両方とも故・國友須賀先生の振り付けです。

「カッパ」は1999年に。「94」はその名の通り1994年に。

「カッパ」はコミカルで、踊っていても見ていても楽しい作品です。

And we had a plenty time to be silly.

そしておふざけをする時間も、たっぷりありました。

MとCの文字を作ろうとしている私たち。

Our friend, Yako, who dances with us usually was cheering for us from the audience seat.

"You guys looked great! 3 was a good balance," she said, but we missed dancing with her.

Oh, the red Kyahan (around my thins) and the red Tego (wrist covers) were made by Yako about 5 years ago.

Thank you, Yako!

いつもは一緒に踊ってくれているやこは、今回は観客席から応援してくれました。

「3人でバランス良かったよ〜！」って言ってくれてましたけど、今度は一緒に踊りましょうよ。そうそう、私が身につけている赤の脚絆と手甲はやこが５年くらい前に作ってくれたのですよ。ありがとう、やこ！

The festival was held on University of Hawaii - Maui Campus.

I was looking back my college days which was almost 6 years ago...

I used to walk around the campus with a backup filled with heavy textbooks.

このお祭りが行われたのは、ハワイ大学マウイ校のキャンパス。

６年以上も前の学生時代を思い出しつつ・・・

こうやって思い教科書の入ったリュック背負って歩き回ってました。

Hokori means pride in Japanese.

We should be proud of our heritage, where we come from, and let others be proud of their heritage, which should lead us to be more understanding toward one another.

「誇り」という旗がありました。

先祖古来から伝わるものを誇りに思いましょう。私たちがやって来た源を。そして他の人々がそれぞれの伝統を誇りに思うことを、心から応援できたらいいですね。そうしたら、世界はもっと理解に溢れるかと思います。

JP - 子ども達からのラブレター

今日は謙遜なしでいかせて頂きます。失礼。

子ども達から頂いたラブレターを紹介。

上の手紙はある生徒が描いて、書いてくれたもの。彼女はとても恥ずかしがりやで、ほとんど自分の感情を外に出さない子。なので、余計にこの手紙がとても心に響きました。（日本語訳：ミス・アカリへ　先生はベストな先生だ。そして私の人生で出会ったダンサーの中で一番素晴らしいダンサーだ。先生はスターだ。）すごい褒め言葉。

上の絵をよく見て、下の写真を見てください。

こんなすてきな絵をある女の子が描いてくれました。私の様子が細かく観察されています（笑）。いつも思うことですが、今日改めて思ったことは、「子ども達は細かい所までよく見ている！」ということ。だからこそ、普段の何気ない仕草にも、ふと口にすることにも気を配っていたいと思います。

みんな同じ格好なのね。

私の名前スペルミスしてますけど、そこがまた愛嬌で。

かわいい卵たち。子ども達の夢も卵から孵ろうとしています。

子ども達が作りました。縫い物プロジェクトとしては、今回で3回目なので、ほとんどの子がヘルプ無しでやりました。彼ら自身もそのことを誇りに思っているようでしたし、私も彼らを誇りに思いました。

母の日には、お母さんのためにこの小さなポーチを子ども達は縫いました。

「LOVE」という刺繍入り！

何人かの生徒たちは、縫い物に味をしめたようで、雨の日の休み時間や、自由時間に「縫い物をしてもいいですか？」と聞いてくるようになりました。なので、フェルトと糸と針を多めに用意して、いつでも彼らが何でも作りたいものを作れるようにしています。これはうさぎさんだと思います。

葉っぱも、彼らの手にかかればすてきな宝物になる。

時々、子ども達に花をもらう。どこで見つけてくるのかしら。

これらは彼らの顔ほどもあるハイビスカス。

これは余談で、笑い話。
子ども達がずっと「先生の踊っているところを見てみたい」と言ってくれていたので、（どこかのイベントで踊るときは前もって知らせるのですが、全員が全員観に来れるというわけではないので。）「それじゃリクエストにお答えして」と教室でビデオを見せました。（教室にはプロジェクターとスクリーンがあるので、ラップトップを接続してスクリーン上で結構大きく見れる。）私は教室の後ろで壁ずたいに立って、ビデオと子ども達を見ていました。すると聞こえてきたのが、
生徒A：「ちょっと、一人の教師にしてはすごい量の動きだね。」
生徒B：「でもミスアカリはそんなに年とってないよ。まだ31歳だもの。31歳は若いよ。」
生徒C：「そうだよ、それに彼女はダンサーなんだ！」
思わず吹き出してしまいました。彼らの会話が可笑しくて、可笑しくて。でもそれを共有できる他の大人が教室にいなかったものだから、私一人で大笑いしました。私の年齢を正確に覚えていたところもツボにはまりました。彼らに言わせると、私はまだ若いそうです（笑）。ありがとう。

4月の最後に今年一年で最後の遠足がありました。

たまたまお弁当をこの子達（やんちゃだけで心優しい男の子たち）と食べることに。

会話のメイントピックは、勿論サーフィンと波のことばかり（笑）。

EN - Love Letters from Children

Today, I'm not going to be modest. Sorry :-)

I'm going to share love letters from my students.

The above is a drawing/letter one of my students drew/wrote for me. She is a shy one; doesn't openly express much of her feelings. Therefore, it meant even more so to me...

Now, look carefully at this drawing and see the photo below.

It was a precise observation of me and my outfit by a girl in my class. I always think this and thought it again today that children are seeing everything. Therefore, I want to make sure that I pay a close attention to what I do and say, even something so subtle. I hope to be a good role model for them...

Sweet eggs - the children's dreams are getting ready to be hatched, too.

My students sewed them. This was our 3rd sewing project, so most of them did it without any assistance. For that, they were very proud of themselves, and I was so proud of them!

On Mother's Day, they sewed this cute pouch even with an embroidery of "LOVE" for their mothers.

Some students are now hooked in sewing :-). So much so, they come to me during indoor recess (when it's rainy) and free time and ask if they could sew. So I have been keeping extra felt, strings, and needles for them to create whatever they want. I believe that this one is a bunny.

Leaves become special treasures once they're touched by the children.

Sometimes, I receive flowers from the children. I don't know where they find them.

This one is a Hibiscus as big as their faces.

This story doesn't have a photo to accompany, but it was so funny, so I have to share.
My students had been requesting to see me perform (dance). Whenever I perform, I let them know in advance, but not everyone can come to the events. So to fulfill their request, I showed them a video of myself dancing (performing). (In our classroom, we have a screen and a projector, so we can watch a video largely projected on the screen once I hook up with a laptop.) I stood in the back of the classroom supervising them from the back while they watched it. Then I overhead their conversations:

Student A: "That's a lot of moves for a teacher."
Student B: "Well, she is not that old. She is still 31! 31 is young."
Student C: "Yeah, and she is a dancer!"
I burst into laughter, but I had no other adult to share the moment, so I laughed by myself. They remembered my age precisely, which impressed me, too. I guess I am still young in their opinion. Yippee!

We had our last field trip at the end of April.

I ended up eating lunch with these boys who are rascals but very kind and hardworking boys. 

The main conversational topic was of course all about surf and waves :-)
