JP - 手話

DonorsChoose.org

EN - Sign Language

There is a site called DonorsChoose.org.
There, public school teachers can post classroom project requests, and donors choose which project to support.

I created a project request for materials to teach my students American Sign Langauge this past November with help of a great friend, Jennifer Oberg who is not only a talented dress maker but also a very active and mighty community contributor of Maui.

Unfortunately, the project didn't receive any donation for awhile.

I was thinking to let it go this time (you can't have your request on-line forever; there is a deadline to receive a full amount requested). Then, a surprise came in when I was sleeping in bed with coughs, runny nose, and a minor fever. I received an email.

The email let me know that I received $50 from someone who had come across my project!!!

Wow... it was an exciting moment.

There were $122 more to go to make this wish come true, so I decided to share it on my social media site. Initially, I did not want to ask my friends for financial help even if it was for my students. I realized hat I would waste this generous person's $50 if I don't act upon it.

Then, within a day, three more people donated, and it was fully funded.

Here is what I wrote on this project request. (There were word limits, so it's not that long.)

"'Words are only painted fire; a look is the fire itself,' said Mark Twain. If so, sign language will be able to deliver the fire to you. My students and I are very eager to learn it. We love to communicate and share stories, thoughts, and feelings. Please help us to become even better communicators.

I have 25 students, between ages 6 and 8. I have 5 bilingual children who speak Portuguese, Italian, French, Spanish, and Japanese. The reason Haiku has many children from different parts of the world is due, in part, to the world famous surfing just off of our coastline. Their parents move here to experience it. Different languages are part of these children's lives. The bilingual children were born on Maui, but at least one of their parents is from another country.

While the children speak English fluently, they speak their parent's or parents' native language(s) at home. This makes for a very enriching classroom experience for all of our students. Our school is a small, rural school on the North Shore of Maui. We have 500 children and over 60% of our students are on free and reduced lunch programs.

Since my students are used to hearing different languages in my classroom and at home, I thought it would be good to teach them another language they all could use and don'™t know - American Sign Language. It does not require pronunciation and is visual and develops fine motor skills. My students now know 100+ ASL words (actually as of today, they know more than 200).

My goal is for them to be able to make sentences and have conversations with each other. Having DVD will help us to attain this goal. The ASL teachers in the video have excellent facial expressions, and my students will be able to see conversations between people. We are already using ASL daily. We use it for spelling words. I incorporate ASL letters into my daily instructions. For instance, instead of raising their hands for certain things, they can sign it to me. I answer them in ASL. We use sign language outside of the classroom as well, such as field trips and fire drills where I cannot talk too loud but want to communicate with them.

Learning a different language broadens anyone's perspective about and the world. ASL will also expand their understanding of people with disabilities and different physical issues. When they use ASL, it is a link of expression to movement and can be a deeper meaning than just verbal words, which helps them to understand body language and facial expressions. Most importantly, children develop compassion and tolerance for differences in the world when they can communicate with others."

And here is what I wrote to thank the donors.

"Thank you very much for your generosity.
My request has been fully funded because of you.

I am thrilled to use the materials in my classroom to continue on our already embarked sign language journey to better understand one another and to better serve the world.

I am confident that my students will be able to help people with hard of hearing if they see them on the street. They would be able to comfort them. They will understand that there are people with many different sorts of needs in this world, and they would use their attained knowledge and creative mind to meet these needs.

Who knows? One of them might propose to her or his loved one using sign language someday. Some may use it to communicate with friends standing across the platform at a train station where voice would not reach. Some may become a sign language interpreter or teacher.

You just planted these wonderful seeds in them with your generous gift.

With gratitude,

Ms. Ueoka"

EN - Mighty Nature and Us

What I felt when I watched this piece of art was of course admiration for the surfers, but what I felt more intensely was this tenderly marinated reverence for the mother ocean.

The surfers looked like children playing on tip of her mighty force.

Mother Ocean, thank you for giving birth to so many creatures.
We are sorry that we've been harming you...

Nature is mighty and beautiful... beautiful and mighty...
How can we possibly despise it...

You can see a photo slideshow of a massive swell that hit Hawaiian islands on January 23rd here.

EN - Koharu Sugawara

Koharu Sugawara is one of my favorite dancers.

I discovered her about a year ago (in the Internet world), and ever since then, I am a big fan.
I could be wrong, but I think one of the dancers (in the mustard color dress) in this video (please click the link) is her.

When I watch her dancing, I can feel my heart jumping and shaking with joy. I want to scream saying, "Yeah!!!!"

Her dance has that kind of power. I think it's because she is truly dancing from her heart. And on top of that, her technique is mesmerizingly sophisticated. She has an enough "fuel" and well-tuned "vehicle" both in a good balance.

She does not blur herself.
She is 100% committed to herself, to the dance, and to each moment.

She knows how to connect with people who are witnessing her.

No, she knows how to connect with something beyond the audience.
That's why, she takes us on the journey to the "something beyond us."
And through that, she connects all of us as one.

(There are two more videos below.)

EN - The Most Important Posession

Flowers a boy gave me

Today, I taught my students the difference between possessive forms of nouns and plural noun forms. (e.g. desk's versus desks).

After I explained what the word "possession" means, I asked them, "What is your most important possession in your life as of today?"

One boy said, "My surfboard!"
One girl said, "My baby brother."
Another boy said, "My Xbox Santa gave me!"
Another girl said, "My stuffed animals."

After I heard everyone's important possessions, casually, not expecting them to answer, I simply wondered aloud while posing as if I was thinking (I actually was), "I wonder what my most important possession is...?"

The next moment, all of them shouted, "Dancing and teaching!"

I was shocked. I stood there agape with surprise.
They seemed to know me really well :)

Both dancing and teaching do not have concrete forms. They are concepts, so I was also amazed by the fact that they have reached a developmental point where they know that we can "possess" intangible ideas.

What I wish for the children is for them to possess not only tangible things but more so things that do not have forms, such as kindness and courage.

When you hear the word, "possess," it may be associated with monopolization or selfishness, but I think that we can also have an image of integration - owning it and holding it in us with dignity.

This way, whatever we possess can be possessed by the world; it would belong to everyone.

EN - My Two Sweethearts

My beloved Sy who is like my nephew and just turned 4 years old said to me when he returned from a 2-week trip to the mainland, "Nana (he used to call me Nana before he could speak, so I ended up being Nana to him), I missed you more than you missed me!"

I was speechless for a second :)
I first thought, "Wow, where did you learn such line?"
But I can totally believe if he came up with it on his own.
He sure does know how to melt my heart, though.

Yasi (9-year-old, Sy's big sister) told me she could not sleep.
Standing on the lowest part of the ladder to her bank bed, I slowly, gently stroked her head - maybe for about 8 minutes until I could "see" her energy settled down.

It brought back a memory of my dad and mom (individually, though; not together) lightly, rhythmically tapping my back when I could not fall asleep. I think they were also standing on the lowest part of the ladder to my bank bed. I wonder what they were thinking...

When I was stroking Yasi's head, I was wishing her all the best in her life. My parents must have done the same. Because of their wishes, I am very happy with my life now.

It was something to realize that I have come a full circle.

EN - A Dancing Couple

I love this couple dancing together. (They are actually a married couple.)
They are really cute together, but not only that. They're both technically highly sophisticated!
I can tell that they are truly having fun.
I can watch their dance again and again.
It's nice that they can share their passion together in this way.
I'm sure it is not always easy (in fact, in their interview, they say that it's harder to choreograph together than do so individually, but they say it's worth it.)

What is dancing? What is art?
Dancers can have fun, and people who watch the dance can have fun, too.
When that happens, can we say the heart (essence) of art is circulating among us?

I personally want the same pair of pants she is wearing in this video.
It looks so comfortable and cute.

There are many other great ones including an interview, so I posted them below.

EN - Abita

There is no day I do not think about the children in Fukushima and other parts of Japan (especially because I work with children here, and I am translating something that has to do with them now).

I found a great video that speaks loudly and clearly without any word, so I'd like to share.
It is short and "sweet," too. (The topic itself is not sweet, but how this was done is sweet.)

This was created by a Japanese student, Shoko Hara who is residing in Germany. This work received an international award. Shoko was born in Okayama in 1988 and moved to Germany in 1998.

Unfortunately, Japanese media has not mentioned her great work.

(Texts below were taken from her Vimeo site.)

"Abita", animated short film about Fukushima children who can't play outside because of the radioactivity. About their dreams and realities.

EN - Days with My Students

At the school garden

January 7th was the first day back after the winter break. I was happy to see my students after the 2-week winter break!

I could tell that some of them grew taller even in two weeks! Their growth rate is amazing. But then, one or two cried saying, "I forgot my homework at home..." Ahahaha :D  They're still the same in an endearing way.

On the first Sunday after the school resumed, I was accompanied by two computers to finish the report cards for the second quarter...
And to consolidate files between the two, so that I can save them in my external hard drive. (One computer is school's, and the other one is mine.)

This was not taken at school, but these are my students playing tags at a park.

One day, for the last 15 minutes of the school hours, until the bell rang, I played chain tag with my 23 second-graders. I couldn't run with my sandals, so I took them off and ran around bare foot. (The ground is grass covered soil.) I was quite serious. Well, really serious to be precise.

If I ran seriously, I was still faster than them, but I couldn't have a small turning circle like they could, so it was difficult to get them. When I finally got some and ran around while holding their hands, the winds ran with us, and it reminded me of my childhood. I used to run with the wind. It was a happy feeling. I can't wait to do it again.

At the same time, I thanked the fact that they can run around so freely with a nice view of the blue ocean. I thought of the children in Fukushima who cannot stand on the earth with their bare foot...

Our classroom visitor.
I noticed that the kids were staring at the wall, so I approached wondering what it might be.
It was a big spider.

After I grabbed it with a tissue, I placed it outside the classroom. I told the children, "It came to see you studying hard."

I saw a double rainbow over the school building after work.

I caught a cold on Sunday. On Monday, I had something important, and I felt pretty well, so I went to work. On Tuesday (today), I had an important meeting, and the minor fever I had the previous night was totally gone, so I went to work. I wore a mask to keep my germs to myself. The children were stunned when they saw me :D They thought I was a dentist or a doctor. That's right. Wearing a mask when you are sick (or to prevent sickness) is not as common as it is in Japan.

Teaching job is NEVER ending.... (any job can be)...
One thing after another...
It is a job dealing with very fresh, ever-growing, lovable creatures.
Everyday is a serious business working with shining ore.

I am blessed everyday to see this world through eyes of my students.

They remind me how beautiful this world is, how precious this life is, and how lovable we, humans are, just like how this girl did it for me.

When I see the world through their eyes, and when I return to their eyes from the world, I am reminded that these precious beings are in my hands, and that I have a tremendously important role and responsibility, which is to protect them, nurture them, and prepare them to fly out to the world.

EN - A Photo Session with Erin

My friend Erin McAvoy and I have something in common.
We both love children and photography.

At the end of December 2013, she was visiting the island of Maui.
She used to live here (Maui), and she was studying early childhood education (going for Master's). She came to a school called ROOTS where I used to teach preschoolers and kindergarteners in one classroom. She observed and helped the children and me.
She now works with infants in Los Angeles. She has a great love for young children as well as photography.

When we met at a cafe to catch up with one another, we found out that her passion for photography and my passion for Odissi could merge together, so we scheduled a mini photo session.

And above and below are what came out of it.
Isn't Erin an amazing photographer already?
I liked how she approached and saw the dance. I liked what she found in it.
I liked how she extracted a part of me and framed it with dignity for the dance and for herself as an artist.

She used her mighty new friend, Nikon D7000. It was a Christmas gift from her boyfriend. How sweet. He came with Erin to assist her - a cute couple. It was a team work among three of us, and we had fun together.

Erin loves to take photos of people, so if you live in L.A. area and would like a photo shoot session with her, please contact Erin McAvoy at erindorothy79@gmail.com.

(By the way, on this day, I didn't really wear make up. I only drew a thin eye line and put a lip balm that has slight pinkish color. No foundation nor anything else. I thought that she wanted something simple. She also wanted to take shots of me practicing. But look how radiant I look in these photos. I thank her ability to bring that out of me.)
